info about atal tunnel
The Atal Tunnel project to be launched on Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday will be from Manali to Leh. About 80 per cent work of the 8.8 km long project has been completed. It is claimed to be the tallest tunnel in the world. It will open in May 2020.
The Rohtang tunnel will reduce the distance between Manali and Kelang by about 45 km. The Lahore-Spiti tribal area, which has been cut off from the country and the world for six months due to snowfall in the tunnel, will be connected to the world for 12 months of the year. It is worth mentioning here that this is being considered as the longest traffic tunnel in the world at an altitude of about 12 thousand feet. About Rs 4,000 crore will be spent on its construction.
In the future, this tunnel will also serve as a lifeline for the army deployed in Leh Ladakh. One more tunnel is being constructed below the tunnel, which will be used for rescue operations in an emergency. It is being built by Strobag-Afcon, a joint venture between Austria and India, under the supervision of BRO.
